Cheap Backpacking – 5 Practical Tips On How To Save On Travel

Cheap Backpacking – 5 Practical Tips On How To Save On Travel

Everyone is looking for a bargain when it comes to travel these but nobody wants it or needs it more than a backpacker.

A backpacker is simply someone who takes on a journey, often travelling from one place to another with all their contents and belongings being carried in their backpack.

To travel further us backpackers need to find out how to save on travel so that we can find a cheap backpacking experiences.

There are five tips that can help you reduce your costs when trying to find cheap backpacking, by using these techniques you will learn how to save on travel so that you can make the most of your entire journey.

First of all be flexible with your departure dates, both departing your country of origin and at the destination.

Airfares work on a supply and demand method, meaning that one day may be more booked than the other, therefore if there are less seats the higher the price or alternatively if there are a lot of seats then the lower the price.

So for cheap backpacking be flexible by dates, maybe try a day or two before and after and if the airfare is still a bit expensive try push out the dates by a week or two. Same rules apply for the return flight home.

You can also use this flexibility on flight times if the airline has multiple flights for that day. Usually the ‘red-eye’ flight (overnight) is the least packed and therefore the cheapest.

Secondly once you find your ideal dates and times research as many online quotes as possible using the exact details you intend to book. Take the cheapest of those quotes straight down to a travel agent or contact an online travel site to price beat or price guarantee.

A price guarantee simply means the company will either beat or match the price of their competitors, plus usually they will give you a voucher to spend on your next trip.

The deal with price beats is that usually you have to pay in full at the time of the booking.

Before paying in full, my third and most overlooked tip is to check all the fees and charges that may be associated with your fare.

Make no mistake each fare has its own set of rules, even if it is the same airline company.

Fees to check include whether or not you can change your dates and if so what are the fees as well as checking the cancellation policy. Is the ticket refundable and if so how what portion do you get back?

Some airlines make their tickets unchangeable and non refundable. So be careful of this rule. Especially when backpacking, plans change frequently and you may either decide to stay longer or come home early.

For this reason you want to make sure you check this rule otherwise if you decide to stay or come home early then you will need to fork out a one way ticket for your return home.

When it comes to staying at your destination then one way to save on travel is by choosing a hostel with a high number of guests per room. It may be intimidating at first to sleep in a dorm with 9 other people but by going in these larger dorms you can dramatically slash the price of accommodation.

With hostels you can decide on what type of dorm you want from 4 people up to about 16, the more people the cheaper it is.

The above tips are great ways on how to save on travel but when it comes to the art of cheap backpacking working while travelling is the best the way to extend your trip further.

You may require visas for some of the countries or you may find a cash in hand job at a pub or in one of the hostels you stay at. Many backpackers get offered jobs in the hostels, particularly around peak seasons or events.

Working while backpacking overseas is a great way to meet new people, getting out there and living like the locals but most of all it gives you that extra cash you need to continue you journey onwards.
